Critical Illness

Critical illnesses, in most cases, strike unexpectedly, resulting in a sudden financial burden and treating one takes time and money and may require multiple visits to the hospital over a long period.

Having a critical illness insurance plan provides coverage against specific life-threatening diseases. It pays a lump-sum amount that can be used to cover these high expenses. The good thing is that this lump sum payout is in addition of your health insurance policy and goes beyond just hospitalisation costs and helps you cover other expenses like doctor consultation fees, cost of medicines, etc.

Accident

Accidents resulting in prolonged or permanent injury bring life to a halt, especially if you’re providing for someone else. We provide coverage for expenses or loss of income as a result of injury or death from an accident.

Accident insurance covers death or specific types of injury as a result of an accident. It also pays a lump sum benefit in the event of an off-the-job accident to help offset out-of-pocket costs due to hospitalization, emergency room care, lacerations, concussions, fractures and more. Family coverage is available.

Health Insurance Plans for Truck Drivers & Owner Operators

Trucking is a high-risk profession because truckers' health are at risk due to smoking, sitting for a long period of time, back problems and of course accidents risks due to fatigue and long hours behind the wheel. And when you’re a trucker, your income depends on your well-being. If you are sick or injured, it’s not safe for you to drive, and you shouldn’t drive. When you are unable to drive, you’re not getting paid. Unfortunately, being sick or injured can lead to further loss of trucking jobs and income.

Your health is vital to your job. Because your health is so important, many drivers want to get health insurance to make sure that if they get sick, they can get the care they need and quickly get back on the road.

Some trucking companies provide good health benefits to their employees, but this is not a guarantee for each company. Also, if you are an owner operator or independent contractor, you might not have health insurance. This means that some truck drivers will need to find their own health insurance. If you are working with a trucking company, make sure to check with them about the health insurance plans that they provide.

For quite a while, truck drivers have been paying high insurance premiums and coverage that didn’t really meet the needs of the insured. All of that happened because their needs have been ignored by the insurance industry.

But that was in the past. Now the truckers have a lot more coverage alternatives than they’ve ever had before.

Health Insurance Plans for Truck Drivers, Owner Operators and OTR

Truck drivers have similar challenges as fulltime RVers when it comes to trying to secure health insurance that is both affordable and flexible enough to provide nationwide coverage. Over the Road (OTR) drivers in particular have a challenge when they are long miles from their home state and need medical care.

Some trucking companies offer their employed or contracted drivers health insurance options but that coverage might come at a high cost to the driver or be lacking in benefits.

Truckers on Medicare

Injured truckers have a difficult time getting medical care. Trucking companies often fire injured truck drivers causing them to lose health insurance and then deny workers’ compensation medical benefits.

Medicare is a program that pays for medical care for individuals with limited financial resources but still qualify for Social Security Disability benefits. SSD and Medicare usually go hand-in-hand. If you are eligible for SSD, you will usually be eligible for Medicare after a waiting period.

SSD and Medicare provide benefits for people who are unable to engage in substantial employment activities and have enough quarters of work credit to qualify for benefits.  As a general rule, if you have worked at least five of the last 10 years, you are “insured” for purposes of SSD and Medicare benefits.

To qualify for SSD and Medicare, an injured trucker must be “disabled” under the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) rules. The SSA considers several factors in deciding if someone is disabled.  Generally, a trucker is “disabled” when he or she is not capable of doing substantial, gainful employment and his or her condition has existed or is expected to exist for at least a 12 month period.

While proving that you are “disabled” can be difficult, using the services of an experienced Social Security attorney is important because many of these denials are turned into accepted claims after either reconsideration or a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge which greatly increase your chances of success.
